Market Opportunity

The Laminate Replacement Opportunity — and Why 8mm Is the Thickness That Wins It

Most SPC flooring sells in the 4mm–6mm range. It works well on flat, well-prepared subfloors. But a large share of the flooring market doesn't have flat, well-prepared subfloors — and that's where 8mm SPC fills a gap that thinner products can't.

Subfloor Forgiveness at 9.5–10mm Total Thickness

An 8mm rigid core with attached IXPE pad brings total plank thickness to approximately 9.5–10mm. At that thickness, the plank bridges minor subfloor irregularities — dips, ridges, old adhesive residue — that a 4mm or 5mm SPC would telegraph straight through to the surface. For your business, this means you can sell into renovation and remodel channels where subfloor condition is unpredictable, without fielding callbacks about visible imperfections or lippage.

The Laminate Upgrade Path — Solving the Moisture Warranty Problem

Laminate flooring has owned the "thick, rigid, affordable" segment for decades, but its fatal weakness is moisture. One slow leak under a dishwasher, one unnoticed spill in a rental unit, and the laminate swells and delaminates. 8mm SPC gives your buyers the same installed feel — the solidity underfoot, the sound dampening, the visual depth of a thick plank — with a stone polymer composite core that absorbs zero water.

You're offering your downstream customers an upgrade path from laminate that solves their biggest warranty headache, and that's a conversation that closes.

Production Since 2018 — Built for 8mm, Not Adapted to It

We've been producing thick core SPC flooring since we expanded our calender line capability to handle 8mm extrusion in 2018. The thicker core requires different calender pressure settings and slower line speeds than our 4mm–6mm production — we run the 8mm at roughly 60% of the throughput speed of a 5mm plank to maintain density uniformity across the full core thickness. It's a production trade-off we made deliberately because the margin profile on thick core SPC justifies the slower output.

How It's Made

Inside the Production Line — 8mm SPC From Compound to Container

Understanding how SPC is made helps you ask the right questions when vetting suppliers. Here's how our 8mm line runs, from raw material intake to palletized export cartons.

01

Raw Material Compounding

PVC resin, calcium carbonate (limestone powder), plasticizers, stabilizers, and processing aids are weighed and blended in precise ratios. The CaCO₃ content — typically 50–60% by weight — is what gives SPC its rigidity and density advantage over WPC.

02

Calendering & Core Formation

The compound is fed into a twin-screw extruder, heated to processing temperature, and passed through a calender roll stack. This forms the rigid SPC core slab at precise thickness. Roll gap settings directly control the 8mm core dimension and surface flatness.

03

Decorative Layer Lamination

A printed decorative film — your chosen wood, stone, or abstract design — is thermally laminated onto the core under controlled pressure and temperature. Registration accuracy here determines how well the surface texture aligns with the printed grain pattern.

04

Wear Layer & UV Coating

The transparent wear layer (0.3mm, 0.5mm, or 0.7mm) is laminated over the decorative film. Multiple passes of UV-cured coating are then applied to the surface, building scratch resistance, gloss level, and the final texture feel — EIR, matte, or high-gloss.

05

CNC Profiling & Click Milling

Slabs are cut to plank dimensions and fed through CNC milling lines that cut the click-lock profile on all four edges. Profile precision is critical — loose tolerances cause gapping or locking failures in the field. We run in-line gauge checks every 30 minutes.

06

Underlayment Attachment & Packing

IXPE or EVA underlayment is factory-attached to the plank back using pressure-sensitive adhesive. Planks are sorted, visually inspected, and packed into cartons with your private-label artwork. Cartons are palletized and stretch-wrapped for container loading.

In-Line QC at Every Stage

Thickness, flatness, click-lock engagement force, wear layer adhesion, and visual defect checks run continuously through production. Pre-shipment inspection reports — including third-party SGS or Bureau Veritas options — are available for every OEM order.

Product Comparison

How 8mm SPC Differs from Standard SPC — and from the Laminate It Replaces

If you already carry 4mm–6mm SPC, you might be asking what the 8mm adds to your catalog beyond a thicker plank. The answer is access to market segments that thinner SPC can't serve well.

Attribute 4mm–6mm SPC 8mm SPC Flooring Traditional Laminate (8mm–12mm)
Subfloor tolerance Requires flat, well-prepared subfloor Bridges minor irregularities (dips, ridges, old adhesive) Bridges minor irregularities
Moisture resistance Zero water absorption Zero water absorption Swells and delaminates on moisture exposure
Underfoot feel Firm, thin profile Solid, substantial — comparable to laminate Solid, substantial
Sound dampening Moderate (improved with pad) Noticeably quieter — thicker core + pad reduces impact sound transmission Good with underlayment
Installed weight Lighter per sqm Heavier — approximately 9–11 kg/sqm Lighter than 8mm SPC
Container loading Higher sqm per container Lower sqm per container (trade-off for thickness) Higher sqm per container
Warranty positioning Standard residential / light commercial Premium residential + full commercial Residential only (moisture exclusion)

The Catalog Positioning

8mm SPC flooring sits between your standard SPC range and traditional laminate, capturing the strengths of both while eliminating laminate's moisture liability. It's the product you recommend when a buyer says "my customers want something that feels like laminate but won't fail in kitchens and basements."

Container Loading Trade-Off

A 40HQ container holds approximately 1,800–2,200 sqm of 8mm SPC versus 2,400–2,800 sqm of standard 4mm–6mm product. Your freight cost per square meter is higher, but the retail price point is also higher — thick core SPC commands a premium over thin-profile SPC in every market we ship to. The margin math works if you're positioning it correctly.

Distribution Channels

Market Segments Where 8mm SPC Outsells Thinner Alternatives

Each of these segments represents a distribution channel where 8mm thick core SPC flooring has a specific commercial advantage over standard-thickness SPC. These are the conversations you can have with your downstream buyers.

Highest Volume

Renovation and Remodel Projects

The highest-volume segment for 8mm SPC. Renovation contractors work with existing subfloors — concrete with patches, old tile adhesive residue, plywood with minor undulation. Specifying 8mm SPC means the contractor skips the leveling compound step on subfloors with imperfections under 3mm, which saves labor hours and material cost on every job.

Why they reorder: Your renovation-channel buyers will reorder this product because it reduces their installed cost per project, not just their material cost per square meter.

Side-by-side comparison of laminate flooring and 8mm SPC flooring showing similar thickness and visual depth
Channel Conversion

Laminate-to-SPC Conversion

Distributors who built their business on laminate are actively looking for a waterproof alternative that their existing customer base will accept. The transition product needs to feel like laminate — same thickness range, same solidity underfoot, same visual depth. 8mm SPC with attached pad is that product.

Proven conversion rate: We've seen distributors convert 30–40% of their laminate volume to 8mm SPC within two years of introducing it, and the per-unit margin is typically better because SPC commands a premium over commodity laminate.

Commercial

Commercial Office and Retail Refits

Commercial refits happen on tight timelines — a retail store can't close for two weeks of subfloor prep. 8mm SPC installs directly over most commercial subfloors with click-lock, no adhesive, no leveling. Pair it with a 0.5mm or 0.7mm wear layer and you have a product that meets commercial durability requirements while cutting installation time in half compared to glue-down alternatives.

Fast installation No adhesive 0.5mm–0.7mm wear layer

We supply several distributors who focus exclusively on the commercial refit segment with this exact configuration.

Property Management

Multi-Family and Rental Property

Property managers replacing flooring between tenants need a product that installs fast, survives abuse, and doesn't fail from unreported moisture. 8mm SPC checks all three. The thicker core also reduces impact sound transmission between units — a selling point for multi-story buildings where noise complaints drive tenant turnover.

Spec recommendation: For this segment, pair the 8mm core with a 0.3mm wear layer to hit the price point property managers need while still delivering the thick-plank performance they're paying for.

Below-Grade

Basement and Below-Grade Installations

Basements are where laminate goes to die. Moisture vapor from concrete slabs, occasional flooding, humidity swings — laminate can't survive any of it. 8mm SPC handles all of it.

Simple sales message: Same look, same feel, won't swell. Basement flooring is a repeatable residential segment with strong word-of-mouth referral patterns.

This is a segment where you can sell the product specifically as a laminate replacement with a clear, simple message your customers will repeat to their neighbors.

Factory Process

Manufacturing the 8mm Core — What Changes at the Calender Line

Producing 8mm SPC isn't the same as producing 5mm SPC on the same line and just running it thicker. The calender process changes meaningfully at this thickness, and those changes affect the product your buyers receive.

8mm SPC core production at the calender line — showing the extrusion and compression process

Line Speed: 3.5–4 m/min vs. 6–7 m/min

At 8mm, the core extrusion requires higher calender pressure and a slower line speed to maintain uniform density from the top surface to the bottom of the core. We run our 8mm production at approximately 3.5–4 meters per minute versus 6–7 meters per minute for 5mm product. The slower speed ensures the CaCO₃-PVC blend compresses evenly through the full 8mm thickness — rush it, and you get density stratification where the outer layers are denser than the center.

Why Density Stratification Matters

Stratification shows up as differential thermal expansion: the plank cups or bows when temperature changes, and your buyer gets a warranty claim. Uniform density through the full core thickness is what prevents this — and it requires the slower line speed and higher pressure that 8mm production demands.

Core Formulation Adjustment

The calcium carbonate ratio is slightly lower than our 4mm–5mm formulation. The thicker core needs more flexibility to prevent brittleness during cold-weather handling and installation — a formulation refined over two years of field testing across North American and Northern European accounts where winter warehouse temperatures drop below 5°C.

Cold-Weather Cracking — Solved

Early thick-core SPC from multiple manufacturers, including us, had cracking issues during cold-weather installation. The formulation adjustment solved it. This is field-tested, not theoretical — the result of documented failure analysis and reformulation across real distribution accounts.

Deeper Click-Lock Profile

The locking tongue and groove are proportionally larger to match the core thickness, which means stronger mechanical engagement. We mill these profiles on the same CNC machines as our other products, but with tooling specific to the 8mm geometry. The result is a locking strength that handles the heavier plank weight without loosening over time.

Denser IXPE Underlayment Pad

After calendering and profiling, the IXPE or EVA pad is heat-laminated to the bottom of the plank. On 8mm product, we use a slightly denser IXPE pad than on thinner SPC — it needs to support the heavier plank without compressing flat under load, which would defeat the purpose of the attached underlayment.

Every process change at 8mm exists for a reason

Slower line speed, adjusted CaCO₃ ratio, deeper click profile, denser underlayment pad — these aren't arbitrary differences. Each one addresses a specific failure mode that appears at 8mm thickness and doesn't exist at 5mm. Understanding the manufacturing logic helps you answer buyer questions about why 8mm SPC costs more and performs differently than thinner alternatives.

Logistics & Freight Planning

Container Loading and Freight Cost Considerations

8mm SPC is heavier and bulkier per square meter than standard SPC, so container loading and freight cost deserve specific attention in your sourcing calculation.

Container Type Approximate Loading (8mm SPC) Approximate Loading (5mm SPC, for comparison)
20GP 800–1,000 sqm 1,200–1,400 sqm
40HQ 1,800–2,200 sqm 2,400–2,800 sqm

Loading quantities vary by plank dimensions and pallet configuration. Contact us for a loading plan specific to your order.

The Freight Math — and Why Margin Still Works

You load roughly 20–25% fewer square meters of 8mm SPC per container compared to 5mm product. Your freight cost per square meter is proportionally higher.

But the retail price point on thick core SPC flooring is also higher — typically 15–30% above standard-thickness SPC in the markets we ship to — so the margin per square meter can actually improve despite the higher freight burden.

Retail Price Premium
8mm SPC typically commands 15–30% above standard-thickness SPC at retail — enough to offset the higher freight cost per sqm and preserve or improve your margin.
8mm SPC flooring pallets loaded in shipping container with corner protectors and stretch wrap

Standard Palletization

We palletize 8mm SPC with corner protectors and stretch wrap as standard. The heavier plank weight means pallet stacking is limited to two layers in the container to prevent compression damage to bottom cartons — we account for this in our loading plans.

Humid-Climate Protection

For shipments to humid-climate destinations — Middle East, Southeast Asia, parts of Oceania — we add moisture barrier wrapping around each pallet as standard practice to protect product integrity in transit.

Dual-Factory Routing

Freight routing follows our dual-factory setup. Orders for Oceania and Southeast Asia ship from our Rayong, Thailand facility through Laem Chabang port. North American and European orders ship from Changzhou through Shanghai.

Buyer FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About 8mm SPC Flooring

Decision-support answers for distributors, importers, and renovation-channel buyers evaluating 8mm SPC.

What subfloor conditions can 8mm SPC flooring handle without leveling compound?

The 8mm rigid core bridges subfloor imperfections up to approximately 2–3mm over a 2-meter span — dips, ridges, old tile adhesive residue, minor concrete patches. Beyond that threshold, leveling is still recommended. For comparison, 4mm–5mm SPC typically requires subfloor flatness within 1–2mm over the same span. The practical difference for your renovation-channel buyers: fewer jobs requiring leveling compound, which saves labor hours and material cost on every project.

How does 8mm SPC compare to 12mm laminate for renovation distribution?

The installed feel is comparable — both provide a solid, substantial plank underfoot with good sound dampening. The critical difference is moisture performance. 8mm SPC absorbs zero water; 12mm laminate swells and delaminates on moisture exposure.

For renovation distribution, this means you can sell 8mm SPC into kitchens, basements, bathrooms, and rental properties where laminate would be a warranty liability. The retail price point on 8mm SPC is typically higher than commodity laminate but competitive with premium laminate, and the warranty story is stronger.

Does the thicker core affect click-lock installation speed?

The heavier plank weight means installers handle each piece with slightly more effort, but the click-lock engagement is actually easier on 8mm SPC — the deeper locking profile provides more tactile feedback during installation, so the installer knows the plank is fully engaged. Net installation speed is comparable to thinner SPC.

We adjust the locking tension based on your target channel: tighter engagement for DIY retail, standard tension for professional installers who prioritize speed.

What is the sound rating improvement of 8mm SPC over standard 4mm–5mm SPC?

With attached IXPE pad, 8mm SPC typically achieves IIC (Impact Insulation Class) ratings 5–8 points higher than 4mm–5mm SPC with the same pad type. The thicker core mass reduces impact sound transmission, which matters for multi-story residential and commercial applications where acoustic performance is part of the building specification.

If your buyers need specific IIC or STC ratings for project submittals, we can provide acoustic test reports.

What is the MOQ for a custom 8mm SPC order, and how long is production lead time?

MOQ is 1,000 sqm per SKU for standard décors from our existing library. Custom décor development follows the same 1,000 sqm minimum once the design is confirmed. Samples ship within 7 days of design confirmation.

Production lead time depends on order volume and current line scheduling — contact us with your target quantity and timeline for a specific production schedule.

Can I mix 8mm SPC with other thicknesses in the same order?

Yes. We produce 4mm through 8mm SPC on our calender lines, and you can combine multiple thicknesses and product lines within a single order.

This lets you build a complete catalog — 8mm for renovation and commercial channels, 5mm for cost-sensitive residential — from one factory with one set of logistics and one quality standard.
